James Lu is a senior business attorney, practicing out of Cooley’s Shanghai and San Diego offices.  Mr. Lu is specialized in assisting Chinese companies in their international transactions, as well as in representing Cooley’s China-based private equity and venture capital fund clients in their investing, exit and other transactions.  His experience includes assistance in capital markets/IPO transactions for fund clients disposing of shares on NASDAQ, NYSE and other markets, including with respect to some of the most prominent China-listed companies on such exchanges.  Mr. Lu represents clients in numerous China-U.S. cross-border transactions, including investors and companies in the Greater China region in venture capital financings and buyers and sellers in China-related cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and Chinese private equity and venture capital funds investing in U.S. companies. 

Prior to practicing law, Mr. Lu held product and marketing management positions in the life sciences industry and worked for organizations including the Eastman Kodak Company, Life Technologies Corporation and several start-ups.  He specialized in commercialization and had over ten years of experience working with scientists and technology transfer professionals to transform ideas into successful products.

Mr. Lu received his Juris Doctor, summa cum laude, from the University of San Diego School of Law, and a Master of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  He attended the Gifted Class program at the University of Science and Technology of China, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree.  Mr. Lu is bilingual in English and Chinese.
